You can expect fresh ingredients and loads of flavors whenever you indulge in some of the top foods in Greece, found throughout the country. Their healthy traditional recipes will leave you wanting more, and fortunately, there are a ton of excellent restaurants, eateries, and cafes to choose from. To help you figure out what Greek dish you’re going to order next, here are a few of the best Greek foods to experience in your lifetime.
Moussaka
As one of Greece’s most treasured authentic dishes, you must try moussaka. This dish includes slow-cooked meats, eggplant, and potatoes, topped with a white sauce which are baked and served as a casserole. Interestingly, while moussaka is typically Greek, the dish comes from Turkey, as Greece was ruled by Ottomans for years and this greatly affected their cuisine.
Greek Meze
Greek meze is a selection of bite-sized or sharable foods. This may include anything from roasted red peppers to octopus, depending on where you order it. They may come served hot or cold, and they make perfect appetizers. Many of these meze have made their way into American food culture as well, hummus, dolmas, and pita are common throughout the United States
Souvlaki
Souvlaki refers to Greek fast food, but don’t let that turn you away. Greek fast-food is typically much healthier and tastier than fast-food in the U.S. You can order gyros, meat and vegetable skewers, grilled turkey patties, seasoned rice, and much more. You will have your pick of what to place inside your pita, roasted chicken, lamb and pork are the most common. And don’t be surprised when you see the Greeks add french fries to your pita wrap!
Greek Desserts
You can not leave Greece without trying some of its desserts, especially its zaharoplasteio (pastries). Most people have tried or at least heard of Baklava, but there are so many other tasty treats to try. Some of my favorites are kataifi and (Similar to baklava but with shredded filo pastry) and loukoumades (lightly fried clouds of dough, usually served with honey and ice cream).
Local Farmer’s Market
For fresh ingredients and bites to eat, visit one of the many local farmer’s markets. Visiting the laiki (farmer’s market) is perhaps one of the tastiest and most incredible experiences you’ll have in Greece. With any luck you will be able to try all of the top Greek foods in this ONE location🤞.
As you can see, there is an endless amount of dishes and foods to try while on vacation in Greece. From cooking classes to food tours there are so many ways to discover the delicacies of Greek cuisine.
