These seaside ports are off the beaten path for most cruise ships. In fact, only the smaller vessels can make it to their docks. You’ll have these 4 hidden gems of the Mediterranean all to yourself.
Hovering off of Sicily’s northeast coast, Lipari sits in the bright blue waters facing a volcano. Lipari is the largest of seven islands known as the Aeolians. Time stops on the narrow streets lined with cafes and shops selling local wines and capers. Seafood is the staple at the quaint restaurants. Simply grilled swordfish with capers, anchovy and red pepper is a menu highlight.
Only smaller ships can make their way to the marina at Bonifacio. Limestone cliffs and multi-fingered peninsulas keep this gem hidden from the masses. Medieval ramparts and roman aqueducts will keep the history buffs happy. While the local delicacies, wild boar stew, chestnut cake and artisanal sausages will satisfy any foodie.
Malta is no stranger to the cruise line set, but just a few miles off the main island lies Gozo. Worlds away from the day trippers, Gozo is home to UNESCO listed stone structures know as Ggantija Temples. These megalithic ruins are even older than Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. For any Greek mythology fans (or Percy Jackson reading kids), Calypso’s Cave is on the island. Thought to be spot where Ulysses was imprisoned for seven years in Homer’s Odyssey.
Guarding the strait that leads to Istanbul lies the tiny island of Bozcaada. Many empires have vied to possess the port city for its strategic location. Beyond its use as an ancient naval prize, the island is home to vineyards, lavender fiends and olive groves. Cobblestone trails lead though this bucolic landscape to pristine beaches not reachable by car.
